Buying an Electric Guitar Amplifier. A Guide.
Given the variety of guitars and the number of amplifier brands available, deciding on the right amplifier has its challenges. With some basic research, the buying decision is made a little easier. So, here is a brief guide for amp buying. On the one hand, it is wise to arm yourself with some research before entering the market for an amp. On the other hand, the quality of amps on the market these days, you could just as easily pick your budget, review a few models in that price range, and make the purchase. So do not stress too much.
The price
Many musicians will advise you to spend a similar amount of money on the amplifier as was spent on the guitar. Why? Well the amp is the channel through which your musical talent will broadcast to the audience. In short, why reduce your guitar's potential by using a lesser quality amplifier. However that does not mean that less pricey amps are of low quality. These days, with the advanced computer aided manufacturing methods, the cost of producing amplifiers is lower while the relative quality improves. This is obviously good news for the newbie guitarist who wants a good amp unit.
Amplifiers are generally optimized to perform with the four types of guitar instruments, for example: the electric guitar, acoustic guitar, electric bass guitar, electronic keyboard.
Electric Guitar Amplifiers: These are hands down the most popular of all the amplifiers. The popularity of the electric guitar explains why this trend.
Acoustic Guitar Amplifiers: These amplifiers are optimized to project the brilliant highs of the acoustic guitar while preserving the warm mid-ranges and bass. Acoustic amps have inbuilt speakers and usually support a mic plug and a line for guitar pickups.
Bass Amplifiers: These amps tend to not distort the sound; rather the focus of a bass amp is to reproduce the low sonorous sounds that bass guitars are so popularly known for.
Keyboard Amps: Simply try to reproduce the sounds made by the keyboard as accurately as possible acting like a PA system.
Types of Amplifier Units
Combo Amps: House both amp unit and speakers in one box. These amps are what you will most commonly find in the market. One of the benefits of these amps is they are easy to carry and transport.
Amp Head: This type of amp is a single unit without speakers. Speakers need to be connected to an Amplifier head to fully function. It is advised to use high voltage cables for connecting the amp head to the speakers. Avoid standard type instrument cables. If you plan to use several speakers, then this type of amp is well designed for the task.
How an amplifier works
The basic function of an Amp is to convert electrical signals into audible sound. To do this, amplifiers use two circuits or stages: preamp and power amp. The preamp processes the signal received from the guitar and sends to the power amp and other processes in the amp, such as the EQ and effects loop. The power amp boosts the signal so that the speakers can produce the audible sound.
Vacuum Tube Amplifier
A vacuum tube is basically the same thing that was used in radios about half a century ago.
Tube type amps produce a unique sound, appealing to those musicians seeking the warmer tones and special distortion effect tube amps deliver. Some consider the tube amp to be obsolete, but for many musicians the authentic and classic sounds of the tube amp ensures its continued popularity.
Solid State Amps
This type of amp incorporates newer circuit design and aims to replicate the tonal and sound processing qualities of the older vacuum tube amp models.
Trying to decide whether to go in for a vacuum tube based amp or a solid state based amp is a very personal question. The difference between the two is something which only very well tuned ears can pick up, however purists tend to stick with the vacuum tube because of the organic and fluid distortion that comes out of it. Most newbies however tend to stick with the latest in technology, including solid state circuits not only because some of these are suited to some of the modern genres, but also because they are cheaper.
Proper Channels
Most amps support multiple channels, which when independently setup, allow you to switch channels easily while playing. For most musicians, channel switching capabilities is an important feature. Channel switching is especially useful for the electric guitarist for the ability to effortlessly switch between the loud distortion effect and the clean rhythm tones. A footswitch, which is generally supplied with new amp purchases, manages channel switching.
Electrical Power
The power of an amplifier is measured in Watts. This is a measure of the capacity of the amp to power the speakers. Keep the following things in mind when selecting the kind of power you want your amp to be based on:
a) Higher wattage will mean a louder sound in the same amplifier.
b) Vacuum tube amps reproduce a louder sound per Watt of power when compared to solid state type amps. For example, a 5 Watt vacuum tube amp will deliver a similar sound volume as a 40 Watt solid state amp unit.
c) A headphone jack is standard in an amp unit. Although it is a simple feature, it is especially useful for practice sessions while not disturbing your neighbors.
Effects
Amps offer a number of effects which you can switch between. These can be summarized as:
Line-6-spider-amp-controls
a) EQ: This generally comes in the form of 2 or 4 knobs with which you can control the range of frequencies in the sound. For instance, increase treble settings for a brighter sound, adjust the middle EQ to full and the treble and bass to zero to achieve a the natural sound of the guitar, add extra bass tones by increasing the bass frequency. As an example, increasing the treble settings will produce a brighter sound, increase the middle EQ with treble and bass to zero to deliver a raw natural sound of the instrument. And then play with the bass control for added bass depth.
b) Effects Loop: An effect loop is controlled by an external chord and facilitates changing the signal carried between the preamp and the power amp.
c) Digital Effects: Most modern amplifiers feature a range of digital effects that may include; flange, phase, reverb, echo, chorus, pitch shift and so on. Remember we mentioned channels earlier, well channels can control effects which can be preset and assigned to a channel. The channel switcher can then easily switch between different effects presets. In many instances, amps will feature preset effects combinations.
Speakers
Speaker quality is important, of course. be mindful of your budget, but try to get the best speakers for your budget. Do note that the heavier and more expensive speakers are always of better quality than cheaper ones. You get what you pay for is a good rule to apply to speakers. Better quality speakers produce better coloration of an amps signal and delivers richer sounds and tones when compared to cheaper models.
Common speaker types include:
- 8” Speakers: found in smaller amps.
- 10” Speakers: find these in amp for for practice sessions.
- 12” Speakers: found in general performance amplifiers.
- 15” Speakers: come in separate cabinets, are paired almost exclusively with bass amps.
Ending remarks
Buying an amplifier requires some initial thought and research. Be clear about the purpose of the amplifier and how it will match and enhance your musical genre. While evaluating your amp needs, consider: your musical genre; how many instruments use the same amplifier; how loud is the drummer in your band; what size performance do you plan and at what type of venues.
Points to consider
- A 40 Watt solid state amplifier featuring 10" speakers will project adequately in most performance situations, depending on the loudness of the drummer.
- For larger performance situations, a 60 Watt amp connected to a 12" speaker will deliver excellent performance.
- A 30 Watt tube amp is adequate enough for a full rock band performance in most locations.
This guide is a starter for you on the path to buying the right guitar amp that meets your musical style and performance needs.
