Buying an Electric Guitar Amplifier. A Guide.

Walk into a well stocked music store and you will be faced a huge selection of guitar amplifiers. What amp is the right match for you and your guitar/s? It can be a difficult buying decision. Here is a basic guide to assist your amp choice. On the one hand, it is wise to arm yourself with some research before entering the market for an amp. On the other hand, the quality of amps on the market these days, you could just as easily pick your budget, review a few models in that price range, and make the purchase. So do not stress too much.

What price

Many musicians will advise you to spend a similar amount of money on the amplifier as was spent on the guitar. The reason is simple: why diminish your musical talent and the quality of your guitar with an amplifier of lesser value than your instrument. In short, why reduce your guitar's potential by using a lesser quality amplifier. But that does not mean that amps of a lower price are of a low quality. The state of amplifier manufacturing processes, that incorporate computer aided technologies, means that unit quality improves while retail prices become lower. This is obviously good news for the newbie guitarist who wants a good amp unit.

Amplifiers are generally optimized to perform with the four types of guitar instruments, for example: the electric guitar, acoustic guitar, electric bass guitar, electronic keyboard.

Electric Guitar Amplifiers: These are hands down the most popular of all the amplifiers. The popularity of the electric guitar explains why this trend.

Acoustic Guitar Amplifiers: The electronics of these amps capture and project the full range of the acoustic guitar's highs, mid-ranges and bass tones. Acoustic amps have inbuilt speakers and usually support a mic plug and a line for guitar pickups.

Bass Amplifiers: These amps tend to not distort the sound; rather the focus of a bass amp is to reproduce the low sonorous sounds that bass guitars are so popularly known for.

Keyboard Amps: Basically these amps are designed to accurately reproduce keyboard sounds in a similar manner as a PA system.

Amplifier Types

Combo Amps: House both amp unit and speakers in one box. Most of the amps that you will see are of this variety. One of the benefits of these amps is they are easy to carry and transport.

Amplifier Head: Is a single amp unit without any speakers. These need to be paired up with speakers by a cable. It is advised to use high voltage cables for connecting the amp head to the speakers. Avoid standard type instrument cables. This type of amplifier is designed to manage the connection of several speakers.

How an amplifier works

The primary function of an amplifier is to convert electrical signals into sound. To achieve this task, amps use two circuits or stages, namely: preamp and power amp. The preamp receives electrical signals from the guitar The task of the power amp is to boost the signal sent to the speakers.

Vacuum Tube Amplifier

Vacuum tubes are what you will find in the original radios 50 odd years ago.

Tubes, when they are over-driven and heated with electrical current produce the “distortion effect” which explains the popularity of these types of amplifier. Some consider the tube amp to be obsolete, but for many musicians the authentic and classic sounds of the tube amp ensures its continued popularity.

Solid State Amps

These amplifiers are a newer generation of circuits which attempt reproduce the authentic tonal sound quality of the vacuum tube.

The choice between a tube or solid state amp depends on both your budget and musical genre. The difference between the two is something which only very well tuned ears can pick up, however purists tend to stick with the vacuum tube because of the organic and fluid distortion that comes out of it. Most newbies however tend to stick with the latest in technology, including solid state circuits not only because some of these are suited to some of the modern genres, but also because they are cheaper.

Proper Channels

Most amps support multiple channels, which when independently setup, allow you to switch channels easily while playing. Channel switching or switching between multiple channels while playing is a rather important feature that many guitarist now-a-days prefer. Electric guitarists find the ability to channel switch useful to achieve efficient changes between loud distorted sounds and those cleaner rhythmic tones. Most amplifiers are already equipped an accessory footswitch which facilitate channel changes.

Electrical Power

Power in an amp is meant to denote the amount of raw power being fed into the amp unit for the speakers. This is usually measured in Watts. Here are a few tips to guide your amp selection, relating to wattage:

a) The higher the wattage spec, the louder sound capability of the amplifier.

b) Vacuum tube amps reproduce a louder sound per Watt of power when compared to solid state type amps. For example, a 5 Watt vacuum tube amp will deliver a similar sound volume as a 40 Watt solid state amp unit.

c) Beginner musicians will find the feature of a headphone jack useful, especially for those practice sessions when you do not want to disturb the neighbors.

Amplifier Effects

Here is a summary of the more common effects inbuilt into amps:

Line-6-spider-amp-controls

a) The EQualizer controls sound frequencies. An amp will feature 2 or 4 dial knobs to control these adjustments. For instance, increase treble settings for a brighter sound, adjust the middle EQ to full and the treble and bass to zero to achieve a the natural sound of the guitar, add extra bass tones by increasing the bass frequency. As we are familiar with the slider type EQ controls on a home stereo system, then experiment with the EQ controls on an amp. Adjusting the treble higher produces brighter sounds, while adjusting the middle and bass produces rich deeper tones.

b) Effects Loop: An effects loop allows you to modify the signal between the preamp and the power amp using an external chord.

c) Digital Effects such as flange, phase, reverb, echo, chorus, pitch shift, etc are supplied in most quality amplifiers. You can save these as presets that can act as channels in the amp. Many amps also come with presets which can be used as well.

Speakers

Obviously this is what the world listens to! So it is good to have the best speakers which you can buy. As a general rule, speaker price generally determines projected sound quality. Heavier more expensive speakers manage sound projection better than cheaper lighter models. Better quality speakers facilitate better coloration of the amps signal, thus creating a richer superior sound.

Widely available speaker types:

- 8” Speakers: generally housed in smaller amps.

- 10” Speakers: housed in practice amplifiers.

- 12” Speakers: basic performance amps.

- 15” Speakers: come in separate cabinets, are paired almost exclusively with bass amps.

Things to keep in mind

Buying an amplifier requires some initial thought and research. Be clear about the purpose of the amplifier and how it will match and enhance your musical genre. Among these are – the types of music that you play, the number of instruments in the band, the placement of the amp, is the drummer loud, the size of the performance etc.

Points to consider

- A 40 Watt solid state amplifier featuring 10" speakers will project adequately in most performance situations, depending on the loudness of the drummer.

- For larger performance situations, a 60 Watt amp connected to a 12" speaker will deliver excellent performance.

- 30 Watt tube amp is loud enough for a full rock band in most conceivable scenarios.

Use this guide as a starting point to formulate a criteria for your guitar amplifier research and ultimate purchase.
