Buyers Guide. Guitar and Instrument Amplifiers.

Given the variety of guitars and the number of amplifier brands available, deciding on the right amplifier has its challenges. This guide attempts to make your buying decision a little easier with arming your with some basic tips. Sure you need to inform yourself about amplifier specs and features, but do not stress too much. The simple approach is pick your budget, review a few models and make the purchase. The state of current technology and manufacturing techniques means that most amps are of good build quality and will deliver acceptable performance.

The price

Many musicians will advise you to spend a similar amount of money on the amplifier as was spent on the guitar. Why? Well the amp is the channel through which your musical talent will broadcast to the audience. Basically, do not diminish your guitar's potential by matching it with an inferior amplifier. However that does not mean that less pricey amps are of low quality. Today, because of computer aided manufacturing, costs of amp units are dropping considerably without affecting the quality of the sound that produced. This is obviously good news for the newbie guitarist who wants a good amp unit.

Amplifiers are generally optimized to perform with the four types of guitar instruments, for example: the electric guitar, acoustic guitar, electric bass guitar, electronic keyboard.

Electric Guitar Amplifiers: These are very popular amps. The popularity of the electric guitar explains why this trend.

Acoustic Guitar Amps: The electronics of these amps capture and project the full range of the acoustic guitar's highs, mid-ranges and bass tones. Acoustic guitar amps always have their own speakers and they also generally allow a mic to be plugged in directly along with the line from the acoustic guitars pickups.

Bass Amplifiers: Bass amps are optimized to reproduce and project the low sonorous sounds of the bass guitar.

Keyboard Amplifiers: Basically these amps are designed to accurately reproduce keyboard sounds in a similar manner as a PA system.

Amplifier Types

Combo Amps: Contain both the speaker and the amplifier unit in one box. These amps are what you will most commonly find in the market. These are very good for carrying around, as long as they are not too large.

Amplifier Head: Is a single amp unit without any speakers. Amp heads require a cable connection to speakers. It is advised to use high voltage cables for connecting the amp head to the speakers. Avoid standard type instrument cables. If you plan to use several speakers, then this type of amp is well designed for the task.

How an amp functions

The primary function of an amplifier is to convert electrical signals into sound. To do this, amplifiers use two circuits or stages: preamp and power amp. The preamp works on the signal it gets from the instrument and makes it good enough for the power amp and the other instruments within the amplifier such as the EQ and the effects loop etc. The task of the power amp is to boost the signal sent to the speakers.

Vacuum Tube Amplifier

A vacuum tube is basically the same thing that was used in radios about half a century ago.

Tube type amps produce a unique sound, appealing to those musicians seeking the warmer tones and special distortion effect tube amps deliver. This is the reason why even today, when they are soundly obsolete and replaced with solid state diodes, they remain in vogue.

Solid State Amps

This type of amp incorporates newer circuit design and aims to replicate the tonal and sound processing qualities of the older vacuum tube amp models.

So, what type of amp is right for you? That can depend on two things: budget and your musical genre you prefer to play. Both vacuum tube and solid state amps produce reproduce excellent sound quality. Purists argue in favor of the more organic sound quality of vacuum tube amps and their ability to produce that unique analog warmth and fluid distortion. Solid state amps are generally cheaper than their vacuum tube counterparts. So, for budding musicians, a sold state amp can be bought with a smaller starting budget.

Proper Channels

Most amps support multiple channels, which when independently setup, allow you to switch channels easily while playing. Multiple channels and channel switching is an important feature to look for when making buying choice for an amplifier. Electric guitarists use this to switch between the loud distortion sound and the clean rhythm tones. Most amplifiers are already equipped an accessory footswitch which facilitate channel changes.

Electrical Power

The power capacity of an amplifier is measured in Watts. And it is this wattage capacity that drives the speakers. Here are a few tips to guide your amp selection, relating to wattage:

a) Higher wattage will mean a louder sound in the same amplifier.

b) Vacuum tube amps reproduce a louder sound per Watt of power when compared to solid state type amps. For example, a 5 Watt vacuum tube amp will deliver a similar sound volume as a 40 Watt solid state amp unit.

c) A headphone jack is standard in an amp unit. Although it is a simple feature, it is especially useful for practice sessions while not disturbing your neighbors.

Effects

Amps offer a number of effects which you can switch between. These can be summarized as:

Line-6-spider-amp-controls

a) EQ: The amp unit will feature 2 or 4 dial knobs that control the range of sound frequencies For instance, increase treble settings for a brighter sound, adjust the middle EQ to full and the treble and bass to zero to achieve a the natural sound of the guitar, add extra bass tones by increasing the bass frequency. As an example, increasing the treble settings will produce a brighter sound, increase the middle EQ with treble and bass to zero to deliver a raw natural sound of the instrument. And then play with the bass control for added bass depth.

b) Effects Loop: Modifying the signal from the preamp and power amp is achieved by an effects loop controller.

c) Digital Effects such as flange, phase, reverb, echo, chorus, pitch shift, etc are supplied in most quality amplifiers. You can save these as presets that can act as channels in the amp. Many amps also come with presets which can be used as well.

Speakers

Speaker quality is an equally important consideration when buying a guitar amp. It is not necessary to pay a lot of money, but nevertheless, try to get the best quality that fits your budget. Do note that the heavier and more expensive speakers are always of better quality than cheaper ones. You get what you pay for is a good rule to apply to speakers. Better quality speakers produce better coloration of an amps signal and delivers richer sounds and tones when compared to cheaper models.

Common speaker types include:

- 8” Speakers: found in smaller amps.

- 10” Speakers: housed in practice amplifiers.

- 12” Speakers: found in general performance amplifiers.

- 15” Speakers: come in separate cabinets, are paired almost exclusively with bass amps.

Ending remarks

There really are gazillion things that you will need to consider if you sat down to decide what kind of an amp you should be purchasing. While evaluating your amp needs, consider: your musical genre; how many instruments use the same amplifier; how loud is the drummer in your band; what size performance do you plan and at what type of venues.

Here are a few guide tips

- 40 Watt solid state amps driving a 10" speaker will deliver adequate results for most performance contexts.

- A 60 Watt solid state amplifier matched with a 12" speaker is completely suitable to all but the loudest performance locations.

- A 30 Watt tube amp is adequate enough for a full rock band performance in most locations.

This guide is a starter for you on the path to buying the right guitar amp that meets your musical style and performance needs.
