Buyers Guide. Guitar and Instrument Amplifiers.
Walk into a well stocked music store and you will be faced a huge selection of guitar amplifiers. What amp is the right match for you and your guitar/s? It can be a difficult buying decision. With some basic research, the buying decision is made a little easier. So, here is a brief guide for amp buying. Sure you need to inform yourself about amplifier specs and features, but do not stress too much. The simple approach is pick your budget, review a few models and make the purchase. The state of current technology and manufacturing techniques means that most amps are of good build quality and will deliver acceptable performance.
What price
Many musicians will advise you to spend a similar amount of money on the amplifier as was spent on the guitar. The reason is pretty simple; the music that you create needs to pass through the amp before it reaches the world. In short, why reduce your guitar's potential by using a lesser quality amplifier. But that does not mean that amps of a lower price are of a low quality. These days, with the advanced computer aided manufacturing methods, the cost of producing amplifiers is lower while the relative quality improves. This trend benefits amp buyers.
Given the multitude of roles that amp units can fulfill, they have been optimized to be paired up with 4 different types of instruments: the electric guitar, acoustic guitar, electric bass guitar, electronic keyboard.
Electric Guitar Amps: These are hands down the most popular of all the amplifiers. The popularity of the electric guitar explains why this trend.
Acoustic Guitar Amplifiers: These amplifiers are optimized to project the brilliant highs of the acoustic guitar while preserving the warm mid-ranges and bass. Acoustic amps have inbuilt speakers and usually support a mic plug and a line for guitar pickups.
Bass Amps: These amplifiers are optimized to not distort sounds of the lower lower registers.
Keyboard Amplifiers: Simply try to reproduce the sounds made by the keyboard as accurately as possible acting like a PA system.
Amp Unit types
Combo Amps: House both amp unit and speakers in one box. These amps are what you will most commonly find in the market. These are very good for carrying around, as long as they are not too large.
Amplifier Head: This type of amp is a single unit without speakers. These need to be paired up with speakers by a cable. It is advised to use high voltage cables for connecting the amp head to the speakers. Avoid standard type instrument cables. This type of amplifier is designed to manage the connection of several speakers.
How an amp functions
The basic function of an Amp is to convert electrical signals into audible sound. To achieve this task, amps use two circuits or stages, namely: preamp and power amp. The preamp processes the signal received from the guitar and sends to the power amp and other processes in the amp, such as the EQ and effects loop. The power amp is responsible for boosting the signal from the pre amp and sending it to the speakers according to the wattage specs of the unit.
Vacuum Tube Amplifier
A vacuum tube is essentially the same as what you find in older style ratios.
When over-driven and heated with electrical current, tube type amps produce a tonal warmth and a unique 'distortion effect' not found in digital type amps. Some consider the tube amp to be obsolete, but for many musicians the authentic and classic sounds of the tube amp ensures its continued popularity.
Solid State Amps
This type of amp incorporates newer circuit design and aims to replicate the tonal and sound processing qualities of the older vacuum tube amp models.
So, what type of amp is right for you? That can depend on two things: budget and your musical genre you prefer to play. Both vacuum tube and solid state amps produce reproduce excellent sound quality. Purists argue in favor of the more organic sound quality of vacuum tube amps and their ability to produce that unique analog warmth and fluid distortion. Newer generations of musicians tend to opt for the latest in amp technology, namely solid state circuits, primarily because this type of amp suits modern music genres. Plus very affordable quality amps are available with this newer technology.
Proper Channels
When research amplifiers, ensure the unit is capable of multiple channels, which can be set independently allowing the user to seamlessly switch between channels. Multiple channels and channel switching is an important feature to look for when making buying choice for an amplifier. Electric guitarists use this to switch between the loud distortion sound and the clean rhythm tones. Most amplifiers are already equipped an accessory footswitch which facilitate channel changes.
Electrical Power
The power of an amplifier is measured in Watts. This is a measure of the capacity of the amp to power the speakers. Here are a few tips to guide your amp selection, relating to wattage:
a) A higher wattage will produce a louder sound in the same amplifier unit type
b) Vacuum tube amps reproduce a louder sound per Watt of power when compared to solid state type amps. A vacuum tube being driven on 5 Watts of power produces the same level of sound as a 40 Watt solid state unit will produce.
c) If you are buying for a beginner then make sure that the amp unit has a headphone jack.
Effects
Here is a summary of the more common effects inbuilt into amps:
Line-6-spider-amp-controls
a) The EQualizer controls sound frequencies. An amp will feature 2 or 4 dial knobs to control these adjustments. For instance, increase treble settings for a brighter sound, adjust the middle EQ to full and the treble and bass to zero to achieve a the natural sound of the guitar, add extra bass tones by increasing the bass frequency. As an example, increasing the treble settings will produce a brighter sound, increase the middle EQ with treble and bass to zero to deliver a raw natural sound of the instrument. And then play with the bass control for added bass depth.
b) Effects Loop: An effects loop allows you to modify the signal between the preamp and the power amp using an external chord.
c) Digital Effects: Many amps offer digital effects like flange, phase, reverb, echo, chorus, pitch shift, etc. Presets can be saved and assigned to channels in the more modern digital types of amps. And many amplifier models feature a selection of effects presets for easy selection.
Speakers
Obviously this is what the world listens to! So it is good to have the best speakers which you can buy. As a general rule, speaker price generally determines projected sound quality. Heavier more expensive speakers manage sound projection better than cheaper lighter models. Better speakers will also allow for a better coloration of the amplifier’s signal producing richer and more superior sound.
Speaker types:
- 8” Speakers: found in smaller amps.
- 10” Speakers: found in practice amps.
- 12” Speakers: find in amps used for performances.
- 15” Speakers: come in separate cabinets, are paired almost exclusively with bass amps.
Final thoughts
Buying an amplifier requires some initial thought and research. Be clear about the purpose of the amplifier and how it will match and enhance your musical genre. Among these are – the types of music that you play, the number of instruments in the band, the placement of the amp, is the drummer loud, the size of the performance etc.
Here are a few guide tips
- A 40 Watt solid state amplifier featuring 10" speakers will project adequately in most performance situations, depending on the loudness of the drummer.
- A 60 Watt solid state amplifier matched with a 12" speaker is completely suitable to all but the loudest performance locations.
- A 30 Watt tube amp is adequate enough for a full rock band performance in most locations.
The tips in this guide will help you evaluate your needs for an amp and assist you find the right amp that matches your musical genre; performance and practice requirements and, budget.
