Buyers Guide. Guitar and Instrument Amplifiers.
Buying a new or pre-owned guitar amp can be a difficult can be a challenge to decide on the right amp for you, your guitar and your musical style. This guide attempts to make your buying decision a little easier with arming your with some basic tips. Sure you need to inform yourself about amplifier specs and features, but do not stress too much. The simple approach is pick your budget, review a few models and make the purchase. The state of current technology and manufacturing techniques means that most amps are of good build quality and will deliver acceptable performance.
What is the right budget
Many musicians will advise you to spend a similar amount of money on the amplifier as was spent on the guitar. The reason is pretty simple; the music that you create needs to pass through the amp before it reaches the world. Basically, do not diminish your guitar's potential by matching it with an inferior amplifier. But that does not mean that amps of a lower price are of a low quality. These days, with the advanced computer aided manufacturing methods, the cost of producing amplifiers is lower while the relative quality improves. This trend benefits amp buyers.
At first glance, amps are designed to match the four types of guitars, namely: electric; acoustic; electric bass and electronic keyboard.
Electric Guitar Amplifiers: These are very popular amps. But their popularity has a lot more to do with the success of the electric guitar itself.
Acoustic Guitar Amplifiers: These amps are used to project the brilliant highs of the acoustic guitar without sacrificing on the mid-ranges and basses. Acoustic amps have inbuilt speakers and usually support a mic plug and a line for guitar pickups.
Bass Amps: Bass amps are optimized to reproduce and project the low sonorous sounds of the bass guitar.
Keyboard Amps: Simply try to reproduce the sounds made by the keyboard as accurately as possible acting like a PA system.
Types of Amplifier Units
Combo Amps: One box containing both amplifier and speaker. Most of the amps that you will see are of this variety. These are very good for carrying around, as long as they are not too large.
Amp Head: As the name suggests, this amp is one unit not containing speakers. Speakers need to be connected to an Amplifier head to fully function. High voltage capable cables are the better choice for connecting speakers to the amp head. Avoid using standard guitar cables. This type of an amp is also great for connecting a large number of speakers.
How an amp functions
The basic function of an Amp is to convert electrical signals into audible sound. To do this, amplifiers use two circuits or stages: preamp and power amp. The preamp processes the signal received from the guitar and sends to the power amp and other processes in the amp, such as the EQ and effects loop. The power amp is responsible for boosting the signal from the pre amp and sending it to the speakers according to the wattage specs of the unit.
Vacuum Tube Amplifier
A vacuum tube is basically the same thing that was used in radios about half a century ago.
When over-driven and heated with electrical current, tube type amps produce a tonal warmth and a unique 'distortion effect' not found in digital type amps. This is the reason why even today, when they are soundly obsolete and replaced with solid state diodes, they remain in vogue.
Solid State Amps
These amplifiers are a newer generation of circuits which attempt reproduce the authentic tonal sound quality of the vacuum tube.
So, what type of amp is right for you? That can depend on two things: budget and your musical genre you prefer to play. The difference between the two is something which only very well tuned ears can pick up, however purists tend to stick with the vacuum tube because of the organic and fluid distortion that comes out of it. Solid state amps are generally cheaper than their vacuum tube counterparts. So, for budding musicians, a sold state amp can be bought with a smaller starting budget.
The Proper Channel
When research amplifiers, ensure the unit is capable of multiple channels, which can be set independently allowing the user to seamlessly switch between channels. For most musicians, channel switching capabilities is an important feature. Electric guitarists use this to switch between the loud distortion sound and the clean rhythm tones. Most amps come equipped with a footswitch with which you can change and juggle between multiple channels at the same time.
Electrical Power
The power of an amplifier is measured in Watts. This is a measure of the capacity of the amp to power the speakers. Keep the following things in mind when selecting the kind of power you want your amp to be based on:
a) The higher the wattage spec, the louder sound capability of the amplifier.
b) Vacuum tube type amplifiers deliver a much louder sound per Watt in comparison to solid state amplifiers. A vacuum tube being driven on 5 Watts of power produces the same level of sound as a 40 Watt solid state unit will produce.
c) If you are buying for a beginner then make sure that the amp unit has a headphone jack.
Effects
Here is a summary of the more common effects inbuilt into amps:
Line-6-spider-amp-controls
a) The EQualizer controls sound frequencies. An amp will feature 2 or 4 dial knobs to control these adjustments. For instance, increase treble settings for a brighter sound, adjust the middle EQ to full and the treble and bass to zero to achieve a the natural sound of the guitar, add extra bass tones by increasing the bass frequency. As we are familiar with the slider type EQ controls on a home stereo system, then experiment with the EQ controls on an amp. Adjusting the treble higher produces brighter sounds, while adjusting the middle and bass produces rich deeper tones.
b) Effects Loop: An effect loop is controlled by an external chord and facilitates changing the signal carried between the preamp and the power amp.
c) Digital Effects: Many amps offer digital effects like flange, phase, reverb, echo, chorus, pitch shift, etc. You can save these as presets that can act as channels in the amp. Many amps also come with presets which can be used as well.
Speakers
Speaker quality is an equally important consideration when buying a guitar amp. It is not necessary to pay a lot of money, but nevertheless, try to get the best quality that fits your budget. bear in mind that heaver and more expensive speakers are generally translate better sound quality. Better speakers will also allow for a better coloration of the amplifier’s signal producing richer and more superior sound.
Common speaker types include:
- 8” Speakers: found in smaller amps.
- 10” Speakers: found in practice amps.
- 12” Speakers: found in general performance amplifiers.
- 15” Speakers: usually found in bass amps and housed in a separate cabinet.
Things to bear in mind
There really are gazillion things that you will need to consider if you sat down to decide what kind of an amp you should be purchasing. Among these are – the types of music that you play, the number of instruments in the band, the placement of the amp, is the drummer loud, the size of the performance etc.
Points to consider
- 40 Watt solid state amp driving a 10” speaker will hold up its own in most performances. However this may not do so well if the band has a drummer as well.
- A 60 Watt solid state amplifier matched with a 12" speaker is completely suitable to all but the loudest performance locations.
- 30 Watt tube amp is loud enough for a full rock band in most conceivable scenarios.
The tips in this guide will help you evaluate your needs for an amp and assist you find the right amp that matches your musical genre; performance and practice requirements and, budget.
